Markets in Financial Instruments Directive review (MiFID II)
The MiFID directive has contributed toward a highly competitive and integrated EU financial market. But with the formation of the new architecture of the European system of financial supervision the directive is expected to introduce several enhancements in key areas.
Also the recent financial crisis and market developments showcased the weaknesses in some of the underlying principles of MiFID and highlighted the need for reinforcement or revision.
The regulatory authority for the securities market, European Securities Market Authority (ESMA) aims to impose greater convergence policies and more centrally driven regulation.
On December 8, 2010, the European Commission published its consultation paper on the revision of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID). The formal proposal from the European Commission is expected in mid-May 2011.
